Maybe you could find a small low key bridal show in your area. The bigger shows are like fashion week, kind of big extravaganzas, all the big name, top dollar vendors attend those. If you can find a small version in a mall, or at a bridal store, that may be where you can find a reasonably priced wedding cake baker. May even ask your local bridal shop, they may know of someone.

I can so relate to your experience. I had actually met with some really nice expensive bakers, and some really arrogant ones too. I just couldn't afford any of the top bakeries listed in a directory I found. Luckily, my aunt stepped in and had her friend that used to bake wedding cakes professionally bake my cake, and she paid for it too (her wedding gift to us). I would recommend this baker, but she's not in your area AND doesn't really do wedding cakes anymore. She didn't like the stress! Lots of pressure to create and deliver a perfect cake without delay.
