Traditionally you have seen a variation of one of the models above sitting upon of the big dessert. The couple is most often featured as a plastic figurine in formal attire. They could arguably be called one of the main attractions at nuptials. Why? Because after a bridal dress, the dessert often takes center stage.

The use of the figurines began in the late 19th century, but didn’t become popular until the mid 20th century. The very first versions were of, you guessed it, the couple in various formal poses, like standing together as they would at the altar, and that's pretty much it. As time went on, cupids, hearts, silver bells, doves and love birds became popular and were either incorporated into the designs along with the figurines, or used alone.

The figurines were normally homemade, and were made of gum paste or plaster. Nowadays they're made of pretty much anything.

Our favorite place to find a custom or handmade design is etsy.com. There are so many creative and unordinary ideas, created by various different artists, that fit the needs of lots of our clients looking for something different and special.

Many retail websites nowadays offer modern figurines are thankfully interchangeable. This means that you can choose the figurine's hair color, skin color and style of clothing to match the features of the couple. You can find sports attire, military attire, same sex couples, couples on motorcycles, provocative sytles, you name it. There are literally hundreds of options to choose from.

By far, wedding cake topper figurines are the most common style we have seen at nuptials, but thankfully more and more out of the box and creative ideas are surfacing as well. Folks aren't that much into the wedding traditions than they used to be.
