There are so many styles, shapes and colors of cupcake stands on the market. If you're set on having a cupcake tiered wedding cake, then you have some fun decisions to make on which cupcake stand will be right for you.

Plastic Cupcake Tower

These come in white or crystal clear plastic. The cool thing about the plastic ones is that they can be washed and reused, over and over. Plastic stands come in tiers up to 7 high. The standard bases for a 7 tiered stand would be 14, 12, 10, 8, 6 and 3 inches. This configuration would hold approximately 100 cupcakes. This is only one option, as many diameter stands and tiers are available.

Wire Cupcake Tree

Wire stands are usually not tiered, but have individual holders that span out in a fanning design. The limitation of this style is that it does not hold as many cupcakes as you may need it to. 24 cupcakes is the normal amount a large size wire holder will accommodate. It's possible to purchase several stands to hold all of the cupcakes for your wedding. The good thing is that these can be easily washed and reused, over and over. Most wire stands have a non-toxic and non-chip finish. Some assembly usually is required.

Metal Stands

Metals Stands are the most sophisticated option, as they look the most professional and buttoned up. You will pay for this though. The good thing is that they hold a lot of cupcakes, so all you need is one, and the stand can be easily washed, and used over and over.

Home Made Stands

By far, our favorite stands are home made. They're grand, they're customized and certainly draw a lot of attention. Any handy-person can create a custom stand with inexpensive materials. Our favorite design is a 4 tiered square block stand, usually made of wood. Picture a wide tiered square wedding cake, with enough space on each ledge to fit a cupcake. The wood can be stained, painted or covered in paper or fabric.

Polystyrene Wedding Cupcake Tower

Probably the most economical option is the polystyrene cupcake stand. The material is Styrofoam like, so you can only expect to get a single use out of it. However, we know bakers who get many uses out of it by covering the tiers with FDA food approved foils every time they use it. The standard size is a 4 tiered display, that will hold approximately 72 cupcakes.

Cardboard Stands

Usually modular, cardboard cupcakes stands are another economical way to go. The downfall is that you probably can only use the stands once, as the layers will probably get soiled from the cupcakes and frosting. You can easily personalize the cardboard by spray painting it or covering it with scrapbook papers, or wrapping it with fabric. The edges of the tiers can be finished off by gluing on the ribbon of your choice. Cardboard stands are a great way to spend the minimal amount of money to achieve the maximum impact. Cardboard stands come in a variety of sizes, up to five tiers and are usually made of sturdy double wall corrugated covered in white paper. A lot of the cardboard stands are recyclable, which are great for green weddings.
