Fondant does take a lot of "know how", time and patience to work with. First, you have to have a large clean flat working surface. Be sure you have plenty of powdered sugar on hand to keep the fondant from sticking to your working surface or your roller. It's best to use a fondant roller, you can get them at a baking supply store. Next you have to measure the cake you're attempting to cover, and make sure that you roll out your fondant big enough to cover the cake. I'm sure you can find a lot of online videos on how to actually work with it. I would say always do a test run on a practice cake before you try to do the real thing.
