Dirt Cake Recipe

wedding cake recipes

Calling all dirt cake recipe fans! For those "out of the ordinary" or "off the beaten path" weddings, you may be in need of this one!

Come on and get your dirt cake on!

Once a few of us “novices” brought a 3 tiered wedding cake into a remote camping location for our friend's wedding. The cake had to travel over miles and miles of bumpy roads, in the back of a trailer.

What a surprise (not really), the cake got pretty badly beaten up by the time we got it into camp. We had to re-frost and re-decorate the entire thing in the middle of the campsite. There were bees, flies, mosquitoes, falling stuff from the trees, all in the cake at one point or another. Someone (genius!) by chance, happened to have a hanging mosquito net that we used to protect the cake by hanging it from a tree. It draped over the cake perfectly to protect it from the elements!

Luckily, I had bag of fake rose petals that we put all over the cake. This helped hide our novice imperfections. By the time we actually ate it after the ceremony that evening, it was pretty dark out – and someone thankfully kept that Coleman lanterns on low. Basically, everyone thought it was great. We trucked in ice-cream in a cooler of dry ice, and had a feast of something we never thought we could, in the middle of nowhere.

We managed to bring all of the ingredients for a darn good dirt cake too. We aimed to make this for all the kids, but it went over better with the adults. You're supposed to make it in a flower pot, but we made it in a sand pail instead (it was clean of course)!

Here was the Dirt Cake Recipe I used!

* 2 lb package chocolate sandwich cookies (like Oreos)
* 1/2 cup butter, melted
* 4 (4 ounces each) packages instant chocolate pudding (that has already been prepared)
* 12 ounces thawed whipped topping
* Gummy worms
* Artificial flowers, leave or whatever you'd like. We were having a luau so used miniature tiki torches

Crush the cookies in a sealed ziplock bag. This will be the 'garden soil' for your dirt cake. Mix the crushed cookies with the melted butter. Use this mixture to make about a two inch layer crust on the bottom of the flower pot.

Next fold in the whipped topping with the prepared chocolate pudding. Spread this on top of the bottom layer. Add the gummy worms, but save a couple. Then top off with the rest of the crushed cookies mix. Place the remaining gummy worms into the top of the soil so that they are sticking out. Refrigerate at least 12 hours (we were camping so put it in our cooler).

When you are ready to serve your dirt cake, you can place your artificial whatever (tiki torches, flowers, etc.) in center of the cake. Be sure to cover the stems with foil or cling wrap. To really add to the effect, serve your dirt cake recipe with a garden shovel.

These have been served to all the kids at many casual weddings that I've planned and been to. You'd be surprised how many adults try to get in on the action. Kids love it!
