Rent a Wedding Cake

wedding cake rental

"Are you serious? Rent a wedding cake?", my brides ask. Believe it or not, this option is popular amongst many brides these days, especially when the cake of their dreams is way out of their reach financially. Or, when there's some element to their wedding location or other, that restricts them from having the fresh cake that they want.

For instance, I once worked with a bride that wanted a fancy fondant styled cake for her wedding in Mexico. The small village she was getting married in did not have any bakeries that could produce a fondant wedding cake, nor were any local bakeries willing to transport a cake to Mexico. So, she chose to rent a fancy fake fondant cake from a cake rental company. They shipped the cake directly to her wedding location in Mexico. It arrived in a wooden box, and in perfect condition, and you really could not tell that it was fake!

A bakery in the small Mexican village was able to bake several sheet cakes for the wedding, as well as a slice to fit in the fake cake. The total cost for the cake rental and sheet cakes, was about a 1/3 of what she would have paid if she purchased the entire fancy fondant cake.

There are a handful of companies that offer wedding cake rentals. One of the biggest cake rental companies we have worked with is CakeRental.com.

So are these cakes real? No they're not. Their usually made from Styrofoam blocks covered with fondant icing and other decorations. However, a lot of these fake cakes have a secret section that you can insert a real slice of cake. This allows the bride and groom to have their cake cutting ceremony. Who would know that the cake wasn’t really real right? The secret section is usually faced away from guests, so they cannot see it. Meanwhile, your catering staff can slice up your inexpensive sheet cake for guests, out of sight in the kitchen.

Most of the rental cakes are pre-designed, but some allow you to design your own. You usually pay for the service and the deposit for the cake. The cakes are often shipped in sturdy wooden boxes.
