Simple Wedding Cakes

When most people visualize simple wedding cakes...they see round. Why? Round is no doubt the most common shape used. It's not until more recent years that they have branched out into new shapes: hexagons, squares, topsy turvy, or all of the above mixed together.
Round shapes will work in most spaces and are pretty universal. They're pretty safe. When you're choosing your shape though, consider the architecture of where your dessert will be displayed. If your reception is in a restaurant with a domed ceiling, a circular shape with rounded edges would complement the space. If your confection will be displayed in a barrel room of a winery (with a back drop of wine barrels piled high), what would a good shape be? You guessed it: round. If your reception IS in a barrel room, and you have your heart set on a square design you just saw in the latest Martha Stewart magazine, do not fret. Tie your square shape in with some circular decor like polka dots, or dragees, or round fondant balls. Put some round candle votives on the cake table as well. You can make it work. To keep the entire theme simple, make sure your cake stand is simple too. An elaborate silver stand with intricate details may not be in order. A simple cardboard base with the outside rim covered with ribbon may be more appropriate. The most common type of icing we see used is fondant. Why? Fondant is smooth and creates one clean sheet of frosting that is usually left alone and not embellished with much more. Things like piping with buttercream are not that common.
