Square Wedding Cakes

Square Cakes

Square wedding cakes have been quite the trend over the past decade. They're cool, they're edgy, they're a perfect fit for couples that don't want that "traditional" or "elegant" looking dessert. Tiers can also be stacked on each other at an angle, or on the stand at an angle to create some angular fun. (see the pic below with the pink gerber daisies) What a fun way to play with shapes!

Check out some of the best choices submitted by our readers.

The shape of your confection can be inspired by other elements at your reception. If the windows, tables, decor, or other details in the space are angular, then an angular dessert would blend well visually.

Consider displaying your dessert on a box shaped dessert table with an angular stand...each set at an angle to play off the shapes a bit.

Another fun thing to do is to add a couple round layers to the mix. One of the options shown in the center above (covered in marzipan roses and hydrangeas) has an angular on the bottom, and the 2 top layers are round. This is a perfect solution if you can't decide on what shape you want, if you want something a little different, or if you can't figure out what your reception space has more of.

To see how you would angle tiers for a cascading effect, check out the shot below.

Box stands are becoming more widely available these days, but a lot of the stands are custom made. It can be as simple as a plywood glued or nailed together, painted and covered or trimmed with a ribbon that matches your event.

We once saw a plexiglass stand that a client got from a department store that was getting rid of their props in the women's clothing section. It was a perfect box shape. The bride's mother had the idea to put colored Christmas lights underneath it, and fill in the surrounding area with iridescent tinsel. So the entire base glowed, and then the dessert was placed on top. It really looked incredible.
