I think that if you just went to a traditional baker who mostly does cakes but always has and will do cupcakes when needed, could do them for much cheaper. Lots of traditional bakers haven't tried to capitalize on the cupcake craze, and kind of roll their eyes at it, and would probably charge much less per cupcake. My 2 cents.

Don't worry, these cupcake shops won't last, how could they? Good for you that you're doing it yourself, that's a great way to take charge and rise above.
