What's up with the overpriced cupcake shops?

OK, I want to know who would pay $4 for a cupcake? Ridiculous. How do these trendy, immaculate, not a spec of dust in sight cupcake shops stay in business? I get that they're trying to ride the cupcake trend wave, but the ocean is flat. Who has money to spend on a $4 cupcake? Half of the people I know don't have jobs right now.

My point is, I chose to have cupcakes for my wedding to save costs. When I approached a few local "cupcake shops" for a quote (they will remain un-named) I discovered they would be just as much as a cake, if not more. Unbelievable. So, I'm planning to bake my own cupcakes and decorate them myself. I'm estimating they will cost me less than $1 each to make. Instead of a cupcake stand, I'm going to arrange them on a bunch of square plates I bought from Crate & Barrel.
